Rite of Passage
The Native American vision quest can be understood philosophically as a journey of self-discovery, spiritual reflection, and relationship with the natural world. The individual temporarily separates from everyday distractions by leaving the ordinary world and enters nature. The wilderness can represent a living world of which the individual is only one part. Mountains, animals, wind, stars, water, and trees can become reminders of humanity's dependence upon the larger natural order. This solitude creates an opportunity for reflection and self-discovery.
