Why Study History? History teaches students where they came from, how human beings have responded to the problems of their time, and how the choices of ordinary people can shape the world inherited by future generations. History allows us to see that connection between the past, present, and future. Human beings are shaped by the past. Our beliefs, institutions, traditions, laws, religions, and cultures did not appear out of nowhere. History gives us a deeper understanding of our own identity and the world we inherited. Every generation tends to believe its own problems are completely unprecedented. History reminds us that previous generations also faced uncertainty, war, technological disruption, political division, disease, economic crises, and social change. We are neither the first nor the last people to confront difficult times. Perhaps the most important reason to study history is that we are temporary individuals living inside a much larger human story. We inherit a world we did not create, make choices that affect people who come after us, and eventually become part of the past ourselves.
